Millwright
Millwrights are an elite group of
construction workers who work primarily with metal,
using machine tools and precision instruments. These
skilled construction mechanics can be called upon to
work within specifications requiring tolerances to a
thousandth of an inch.
Many of the region’s top contractors
recognize union millwrights as the most highly skilled
in the industry. The center’s millwright apprenticeship
program includes classroom instruction on leading edge
technologies that are put to the test in our
state-of-the-art millwright shop.
And that’s just the beginning. The
knowledge and skills developed during a millwright
apprenticeship serve as the foundation for lifelong
learning opportunities. In addition to the leading-edge
training offered locally, journeymen can extend their
pursuit of the most sophisticated training in the
industry through the United Brotherhood of Carpenters
and Joiners of America International Training Fund. A
$25 million facility in Las Vegas hosts thousands of
carpenters interested in advancing their skills every
year. The training facility is also where many of the
industry’s top manufacturers are represented.
Daily responsibilities include the
study and interpretation of blueprints, drilling,
welding and bolting. The millwright’s expertise is used
in the installation of generators, conveyors, escalators
and electric turbines, the installation and maintenance
of machinery used in manufacturing and the precision
work required in nuclear power plants.
